After my extended hiatus I am so happy to be back! Today I want to look at what we can and can't do regarding Plastic Pollution during this time of Sheltering in Place, Quarantine at Home,  and Lockdowns.  We can be safe and continue to do our part to curb Plastic Pollution.  We just need to do a few things a little differently for a while. So here we go, a few ideas to reduce single use plastics during Covid-19.
  • Can we still bring our own reusable grocery bags when we shop?  Yes!  Reusable canvas or cotton blend fabric bags can be used safely.  Bags should be laundered directly after use, or at least between each use.
  • Should I use single use plastic for produce?  You do not need to use plastic bags or clamshells for your produce.  You should, however, consider spraying produce with a solution of 1 cup vinegar to 4 cups water and a tablespoon of  lemon juice.  Shake well and spray fruits and vegetables liberally.  Rinse with fresh cool water.
  • If I choose to use single use bags during this crisis will I still be able to bring them back to the store for recycling?  In most cases, no.  Most stores have temporarily stopped  taking plastic bags for recycling.  So what should you do with those plastic bags?  Make plarn!  Plarn is short for Plastic bag yarn.  Plarn can be used to make sleeping mats, shopping bags, can cozys, coasters, pet leashes, beach bags, pan scrubbers,  and more.  Spray bags with disinfectant spray or rinse them in a solution of  one tablespoon of bleach in a sink full of warm water.   Check You Tube for instructions for individual plarn projects!
  • What do I need to be aware of for restaurant take out?  If restaurants in your area are open for take-out, ask if they use Styrofoam boxes.  If they do, ask for your order could be wrapped in foil instead.  Request "no plastic cutlery".   Pizza carry out or delivery?  Ask to have the little plastic "table" left off the center of your pie!
Finally, if you're sheltering at home you may have time to make "real food"!  Look through your cookbooks or foodie web sites for recipes to make food from scratch!  Try baking cookies or other treats the old fashion way.   Check your pantry and fridge, you probably have the ingredients for delicious home made  soups, stews, casseroles and more.  What's your favorite comfort food?  Why not create your own dishes from fresh ingredients?  Get the kids involved in preparing meals.  You'll find yourself shopping less, throwing away less packaging and having fun in the kitchen!  Do you have more ideas for using less plastic as we get through these days?

PFC Will Come to You!

We love to work with educators developing curriculum to meet your specific needs!  We will come to your school or meeting place to work with you in developing diverse, cross-curricular units that fit your state's Standards and Benchmarks.  We also do grade level multi-media, hands on classroom presentations.
A typical day might consist of a morning staff presentation / workshop, tailored to meet your specific needs.  Then a whole school assembly to introduce Plastic Pollution  to students.  After the assembly, we will happily go to individual classrooms to teach cross curricular, hands on, grade level appropriate lessons.
We will also meet with community groups, from Scouts to city councils, to discuss ways to reduce the "plastic footprint" through education and taking small steps toward a reasonably "green" future.
If you are a school or community leader who would like to work toward a Plastic Free future, please let us know! We can accommodate groups of any size.

Next week Plastic Free Curriculum is on the road!  We are fortunate to have been invited to join The Green Highway, the educational wing of the Bonnie Rait tour.  This summer Bonnie is joining James Taylor, and we will be with them for several dates!
Come and say hi if you're going to be in Memphis TN, at the Fed Ex Forum August 5, DTE Pavillion (aka Pine Knob) in Clarkston, MI on August 8, The Blossom Music Center, in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio August 9, Fenway Park in Boston on August 11, or September 2 at The Big Top Chautauqua, in Bayfield, WI!  We will be presenting information on plastic pollution, as well as what people are doing to fight it.  We will offer information on our curriculum and outreach programs, and have lots of free giveaways!  We hope to see you on the road!
